Celebrating Five Years of the Warren B. Nelms Institute for the Connected World

The Warren B. Nelms Institute for the Connected World celebrated its 5th Anniversary in January 2022. Since its inception in 2017, the institute has become a national leader in the education and research on Internet of Things (IoT) Innovation. Under the leadership of Dr. Swarup Bhunia, Director, and Dr. My T. Thai, Associate Director, the Warren B. Nelms Institute has developed broad IoT technologies and applications to create more secure, efficient, and connected communities.

Nelms Institute Students Showcase Research Projects at Gator Day

On February 15, 2022, University of Florida students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered at the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee for Gator Day. Faculty and students from the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering showcased various research projects. Among them were three exciting IoT projects from the Warren B. Nelms Institute for the Connected World: UF Smart Campus, Remote Chess, and Medicine and Illegal Substance Detection in Mail Packaging Using NQR Spectroscopy.

Recruiting for UF GenCyber Summer Camp

We are pleased to launch the first GenCyber Summer Camp for security training of high school students at University of Florida (UF). For this camp, we are looking for six UF undergraduate students to help with UF GenCyber Summer Camp activities. This is a paid opportunity for about 50 total hours over a two week period from July 11th – July 22nd, 2022. It is preferred that candidates have a basic understanding of hardware security/cybersecurity. Candidates will mainly help to facilitate team activities in virtual break out rooms Monday-Thursday, and provide help for on-campus activities on Fridays. Janise McNair Recognized as Network Research and Service “Star”

In December 2021, Janise McNair, Ph.D., UF Associate Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Warren B. Nelms Institute faculty member, was named one of 13 2021 Stars in Networking and Communications  by the N2Women (Networking Networking Women) group of the IEEE Communications Society. The N2Women’s Stars List recognizes researchers who have displayed outstanding research outcomes and/or service contribution in the networking and communications field.

Dr. Sandip Ray Awarded Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) Grant

Dr. Sandip Ray, endowed IoT term professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Nelms Institute faculty member, has been awarded a research grant by the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC). The three-year grant funds research on the project “Security Assurance for Multi-tenant Accelerators.”

Research Spotlight: “SaccadeCam: Adaptive Visual Attention for Monocular Depth Sensing”

Brevin Tilmon, PhD Student at University of Florida, and Sanjeev Koppal, Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, are researching adaptive resolution, which allows cameras to distribute higher resolution onto parts of images that matter most.

Research Spotlight: Improving Data Sampling Methods

Dr. Xiaochen Xian, assistant professor in the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering and Warren B. Nelms Institute faculty member, and her students are currently researching new methods that can make sampling and monitoring data more efficient. These methods have significant real-world applications including COVID-19 pandemic surveillance and faster wildfire detection.
