AI-POWERED MATHEMATICS EDUCATION PROJECT FUNDED BY UF PRESIDENT’S STRATEGIC FUNDING INITIATIVEA new collaborative research project will use AI to facilitate mathematics education in an interactive and unique way. “SALT-Math: Scalable AI-Augmented Learning by Teaching for Math Education” aims to revolutionize K-12 mathematics learning by implementing a learning-by-teaching framework that uses a large language model to flip students’ roles as teachers to AI agents (resulting in enhanced student outcomes). This project has received $930,000 in funding over three years. SALT-Math is one of 10 new projects that received funding through University of Florida President Ben Sasse’s strategic funding initiative. The funding initiative is designed to advance interdisciplinary scholarship and enhance the student experience. |
Dr. Baibhab Chatterjee Works to Create Links for Wireless Neural Implants Placed Deep Inside the BrainA recent publication in Nature Electronics highlights work on extremely energy-efficient broadband communication in distributed wireless brain implants spearheaded by ECE Florida Assistant Professor Baibhab Chatterjee. The research has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of neurological and behavioral disorders. The article presents the techniques required to create ultra-low power wideband/broadband data communication links, using the conductive properties of the brain tissue, for wireless neural implants placed deep inside the brain (at 5-6 cm depth). |

Dr. Baoyun Ge Receives NSF Career Award to Explore High-Performance, Highly Sustainable Electric MachinesAssistant Professor Dr. Baoyun Ge has received an NSF CAREER Award for his project “Guided Exploration of Multiphysics Design Space for Electric Machines Using Tensorial Analysis (GEOMETRY).” The $550k project will help Dr. Ge explore the performance boundaries of electric machines in order to continue the fight against climate change and excessive carbon emissions. Given that 2023 had the hottest days on Earth since 1940, Dr. Ge feels a heightened sense of urgency in the fight against climate change and excessive carbon emissions. |

Dr. Swarup Bhunia Elevated to IEEE FellowDr. Swarup Bhunia, Director of the Warren B. Nelms Institute for the Connected World, has been elevated to the rank of life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of the prestigious grade elevation. Dr. Bhunia was elevated for contributions to the design of secure and trustworthy microelectronic systems. |

Two Warren B. Nelms Institute Faculty Members Receive 2023 International Educator of the Year AwardsTwo Warren B. Nelms Institute faculty members have received 2023 International Educator of the Year Awards, presented by The University of Florida International Center. The International Educator of the Year Awards honor the outstanding contributions of faculty and staff to the internationalization of the University of Florida and the impact of those contributions on students, international partners, and university stakeholders. Each year, one senior faculty, one junior faculty, and one staff member are presented with the award. Dr. Pavlo “Pasha” Antonenko, Professor of Educational Technology in the School of Teaching and Learning, received the award in the senior faculty category. Dr. Gloria Jung A. Kim, Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Education, received the award in the junior faculty category. |
