Armed with training from the University of Florida’s college of engineering, Santa Fe College instructors this week will train peers from other state colleges to examine the safety of autonomous systems and strengthen the workforce powering them.
Through the NASA-funded TRANSCEND project, a team of researchers is exploring the safety and trustworthiness of autonomous systems, including airplanes and drones. This month marks the next step, as Santa Fe College instructors take the lead to prepare a workforce in artificial intelligence safety.
This month, Santa Fe College instructors are training peers from five other community colleges across Florida. Those instructors will then train others, eventually covering all 34 community colleges across Florida. The team calls it the “chain effect.”
“We teach teachers who directly integrate the knowledge in their courses, but they also train other teachers,” said Sandip Ray, Ph.D., the project lead and UF’s Warren B. Nelms endowed professor. “We hope to make community college students across the state understand the strength and weaknesses of physical AI — when you can trust it, when you cannot and how to make an informed choice that is safe for the requirements of the application.”
