Tech Tuesday: VETS-HASTE Program Teaches Veterans Hardware Security Skills

In this Tech Tuesday video for WCJB TV20, UF Innovate’s Bethany Gaffey interviews Dr. Sandip Ray about the VETS-HASTE program, which supports local veterans by training them in hardware security. This innovative initiative provides veterans with the tools to transition into civilian life by training them in the security of silicon chips and devices—skills that are becoming increasingly critical.

Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)‘s ExLent program, VETS-HASTE takes on 10 participants annually over three years, offering comprehensive training in various aspects of hardware security and hands-on experience with local companies.

With Florida boasting the highest veteran population in the U.S., this program addresses the urgent need for a skilled workforce, especially as hardware security takes center stage in the wake of the CHIPS Act. Hosted at the UF Warren B. Nelms Institute for the Connected World, VETS-HASTE is not just filling a gap—it’s setting a new standard for veteran reintegration and career development.
